A fanfare for brass quintet, Dawn reflects the mood of a group of soldiers on the morning of a great battle. As the sun rises, the troops eagerly anticipate their assured victory over their opponents. This piece utilizes typical elements of a fanfare, such as dotted rhythms, sequences, ascending runs and arpeggios, as well as contrapuntal and lyrical elements to create a powerful, exciting sound. This piece was written in such a way as to take advantage of antiphonal spacing of the ensemble. Harmonically, the piece is fairly modal throughout, giving it an old fashioned and militaristic air.
